There was a rumor/news/buzz going on in our forum regarding the discontinuation of Unlimited plan on EVDO service. It has created a stir in the existing customers, and many are even planning to move on to some other ISP. And it was confirmed that BSNL has brought some new changes in it’s EVDO tariff after some customers got a notification stating the change in plans and regarding the Unlimited plan and even BSNL published the new plan on their site to fuel the fire.
So I decided to get the official news straight from the BSNL and sent a mail to JTO in Bangalore who is in charge of EVDO service. He is friendly and is in touch with me since I started this website and forum. After exchanging some mails, I’ve gathered the official news here in this post. Hope you all find it useful.
I have got a good news and a bad news for ‘all’ BSNL EVDO users in India. Let me start with the bad news first. (will be bitter for existing users).
Earlier BSNL had just one unlimited plan in its EVDO service ever since they started it. But now for some reasons (I’ll tell you why) it has split the service into different plans and introduced 5 new tariffs for its customers. Thankfully it has retained its unlimited plan, but now it comes at a cost higher than before. All these 5 plans is effective from November 1st of this year. Here’s how the new tariff is like:
Sl. No | Cost of the Plan | Monthly free usage in GB |
1. | 199.00 | 0.5 |
2. | 299.00 | 1 |
3. | 449.00 | 2 |
4. | 649.00 | 5 |
5. | 999.00 | Unlimited |
Via the official BSNL site.
From Nov 1, all users will be automatically moved on to the Rs 999.00 Unlimited plan by default . Users can then switch to different plans of their choice by submitting a request in change of plan at their nearest telephone exchange.
Now the good news is that BSNL is upgrading the network from Rev 0 to Rev A EVDO technology. This means you get speeds up to 3.1 Mbps over the conventional 2.4 Mbps. And added to this, BSNL will shortly enable all India roaming (National Roaming) (technical work is almost over, testing is in progress)in 1 – 2 months with no additional cost.
While this is one reason for the hike in price, another reason is to reduce the load on their network and hence to reduce the bottleneck in the data flow. This thus increases the overall performance of the stability and speed. This will be possible because there will be less simultaneous logins, since many people will switch to/prefer limited data plans.
Sooner or later, the existing customers will have get their device exchanged after BSNL upgrades their network to Rev A. This is because the old devices do not support Rev A technology. New users need not worry about this. However BSNL will notify you to get your device exchanged to switch to Rev A network after the upgrade work is finished in your circle.
Well to conclude, Rs. 999.00 for Unlimited plan is steep. Considering the quality of service now available in most parts of the country, it is expensive. Only urban customers will get good quality in service after upgrading to the Rev A technology. Apart from that, this is the only service which will satisfy the needs of people who are in constant move and for those who do not have cable (ADSL)Â internet in their area, since it offers good network coverage and unlimited usage at considerable price tag.
Once again, I would like to thank the JTO of Bangalore for giving out such a great information to me. And to all those who have questions in their mind, can drop in their queries in this thread in our forum rather than posting a comment here, because the chances of getting reply here in comments is very bleak. Happy surfing.
Take a poll:
The network upgradation and the capacity is comparable in rates with other providers such as Rim, Tata Indicom and airtel. All of them are providing wireless broadband in Rs 1200+ range.Recent mails are very few and far so judgement of network quality is difficult . But other things sounds well.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the valuable info Giga. :)
ReplyDeleteyou are welcome spectre :)

ReplyDeleteFeeling bad that Tariff varies so steeply from 550 to 650 to 999,
ReplyDeleteI mean 650 was ok for unlimited but 999 is to more. Please do something everybody. On the other hand i just phoned the BSNL hub in our area and they say they dont know of any change in Tariff(Kalyan,Maharastra)
Is this hike is for PCMCIA type only? I couldn't got u properly?
ReplyDeleteThis is NOT for PCMCIA cards. The hike is only for USB EVDO devices.
ReplyDeleteHey Giga, I Phoned the head GM in Kalyan,MAHARASTRA and she said that its true there are such plans for Tariff but it has been withheld ,and yet not decided on what will be done with existing customers, She says if there is any change then it will be intimated in the bill or a letter from Bsnl. But for now this Tariff is WITHHELD AND THE NEW TARIFF IS NOT APPLICABLE FROM NOV 1,,, Got a relief with her answer

Hi all, I got a new bill from BSNL Ghaziabad for the period 08/09/2009 to 18/10/2009 of Rs 2659. The details there are that -
ReplyDeleteFixed Monthly Charges
product for EVDO(FOR THE ABOVE PERIOD) - 873
Fixed Monthly charge for NIC/EVDO Card - 268.85
One Time Charges
Outstanding amount from legacy system - 847.00
Activation charge for EVDO/NIC - 500
TOTAL(With tax & surcharge) - 2659
Can anyone tell me what is this. As i contacted with my local bsnl office but they had no information. i m planning to go to the head of Accounting office but willl take time.
Pls help
Airtel introduced 3G compatible devices and currently supporting speeds upto 256kbps. I would go with Airtel for the same 999 Rs since Airtel is MUCH MORE RELIABLE than bsnl.
ReplyDeleteGuys, its time to switch over.
BSNL, get back to 650 UL plan, else your EVDO plans will be in SOUP.
I Will buy this EVDO USB Modem if BSNL changes the tariff below Rs 350/month unlimited. otherwise i will stick with Reliance Rs.81/week or Aircel Rs.98/Month , both of these are unlimited(Reliance + Aircel), well the speed is slow though can't deny that. but for students such as myself i would recommend these Two above (Reliance + Aircel), Don't even think about Airtel its one of the costliest ISP in the whole of India.
ReplyDeleteFinally existing users no need to pay 999.... finalized decision!!!!
ReplyDeleteGreat Relief.......................
But in BSNL official Website they also mentione that
ReplyDeleteEVDO data card tariff(w.e.f. 01.11.2009) :
Sl. No FMC in Rs. Monthly free usage in GB
1. 199.00 0.5
2. 299.00 1
3. 449.00 2
4. 649.00 5
5. 999.00* Unlimited
* Existing EVDO customers would continue to avail the unlimited data usage@Rs 650 per month
OR Check through (http://www.bsnl.co.in/service/evdo.htm)
Note.:
Service Tax as applicable will be charged extra.
The above bundle free usage will also be available while roaming.
The usage charges beyond bundled free usage will be @ Rs. 2/- per MB.
The above volume-based tariff will be applicable wherever volume-based charging and billing is feasible. Otherwise, revised Unlimited plan (Rs.999) as mentioned above will be applicable.
They updated it now. They have officially withheld the change in hike for existing customers.
ReplyDeleteHi Ranjeet,
ReplyDeleteI and one of my frnd too got the same bill and almost all the things were same.
We went to the BSNL office in Raj Nagar (the place from where Internet is monitored). They immediately reverted the Rs. 500 Activation charge.
About rest of the charges they were not clear as hey told its system generated.
they could not even give us any information about the revised tariff.
They told something has changed and they are trying to figure out each and everything from the higher authorities.
SO if you go and get your query resolved please do ask about the revised tariff.
Thanks..

ReplyDeleteHi,
ReplyDeleteI had purchased my evdo in August. I live in bhubaneswar, Orissa. currently having 650 unlimited plan.
It says that from 1st november the plan would change to 999+tax. so will my plan automatically change to 999 or it would continue to stay 650?
unlimited means both uploads and downloads. so suppose if i download 20gb in a month what will i be charged in bill...? same 650 or 999?
any idea when they r movin to Rev A EVDO platform??????????
ReplyDeleteI have talked just now to our BSNL SDE (sub divisional engineer) regarding tariff hike. He informed there is no hike in tariff other than the old 550 changes to 650 this month onwards. He added, The one and only unlimited tariff plan will continue..
ReplyDeleteHi, I asked BSNL kalyan ppl recently, they told me tariff hike is only 550 to 650.
ReplyDeleteYippie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have purchased evdo on 25-JAN-2010. When i have purchased EVDO bsnl officials told me that the unlimited plan is of 717/- with S.T..
ReplyDeletei am confused.
Please tell me that is any one in india charge 999/- unlimited in JAN bill...

ReplyDeleteThe last decided thing abt existing customers in KOLKATA :-
ReplyDeleteUnlimited plan for existing customers - 650.00 (Fixed)
65.00 (10%S.T.)
1.95 (E.C.3%of S.T.)
-----------
717.00 (approx.)
What you said made a lot of sense. But, think about this, what if you added a little content? I mean, I dont want to tell you how to run your blog, but what if you added something to maybe get peoples attention? Just like a video or a picture or two to get people excited about what youve got to say. In my opinion, it would make your blog come to life a little bit.:)
ReplyDeleteanybody call tell me???
ReplyDeletecan we make calls from evdo & how????
I really don't accept this post. Even so, I had looked with Bing and I have found out that you are correct and I had been thinking in the incorrect way. Keep on producing quality material similar to this.
ReplyDeleteI want to take one new EVDO SIM only for internet connection. But BSNL office charges Rs 380/- for new one. Is it fare ?
ReplyDeleteSpot on with this write-up, I truly think this website needs much more consideration. I’ll probably be again to read much more, thanks for that info.
