On-Rental or On-Purchase ?

As most of you know, there are two options to choose before you purchase the device. One is ”On-Rental” and the another is “On-Purchase”. To know more about the price difference, see this page.

If you choose “On-Rental”, then you will pay little extra every month and if you opt to purchase the device at the beginning, i.e “On-Purchase”, then you will pay low bill every month.

So which plan is best for you? If you are big on pocket, you will go for “On-Purchase”, if not you will go for “On-Rental”. But there is something that you will have to keep in mind. On-Purchase will give you the limited warranty, but whereas On-Rental will give you unlimited warranty. So what’s the advantage?

I’ll explain you in brief. Think; if you bought the device at beginning for 3,500 Rs, the device is all yours and you will pay no extra cost every month expect the regular fee. You will get warranty for a year or two. And if something goes wrong and your device is not functioning after the warranty period, then you will have to pay for repair charges, if the device cannot be repaired, you will have to dig up your pocket and purchase the device once again!

But whereas if you choose to go for “On-Rental”, you will pay little extra, and the advantage is, you will get the device repaired of replaced if something goes wrong whenever or for repeated number of time with no cost!

If you are thinking how I came to know about this, then I have the answer for you.

Recently, my device was not able to connect to the internet, after few days I took the device to the exchange and reported the problem. They asked me for my number, after giving my number, they checked online for the type of option that I have chosen. Hopefully, I’m “On-Rental”, and they said since your device is on rental, we will fix the problem and will give the device tomorrow. And I went to exchange on the next day, I got my device repaired for no charges.

I just asked them about what if I got this device for “On-Purchase” and they said it will repaired for free only when its under warranty!

I also read a post from some member in the forum (don’t remember the name), which says about similar consequence. But I experienced it.

So the verdict is, pay little extra every month and choose “On-Rental”, instead of buying the device at once and making your pocket cry when it goes boom!

  1. Dear Santhosh,

Me the person was suggesting about rental of the device instead of purchase. The thread is there. With my past 15 years experience of the IT, i am faced same problems with several companies in so many times after the sales support. That only reason i took the connection on the rental basis. I am only person in our area on the monthly rent basis out of 42 users. All are on purchased the device. Immm , Rich people. What can i say !!!

FYI : only 48 connections are per tower/area the EV-DO service.

I can't able to made EV-DO tower maps in Google Earth like this image as kmz file. That only reason delaying your birthday gift. We need an expert programmer in Google Earth API . Anybody is there ?

  2. Santhosh,

Here in tamilnadu TTSL started EV-DO service under the name "PHOTON" . The interesting issue the terms of service is "USB will be on Sale model" Did you able to understand the money mind? and cost is too high compare to our BSNL's EV-DO service. We pay only 550 INR = Tax for unlimited internet access. But TTSL charging 1500 INR + Taxes. Techies like us must support BSNL and promote the BSNL's EV-DO service in rural areas for saving rural people from such money minded providers. What about your stand in the issue?

  4. According to me its better to buy the device~~~! Rather than paying 200 xtra plus 12.4% tax! so if you are going to use device for more than 1 year then buy the device! and keep it safe and enjoy!

  41. I had a very strange problem in Lucknow. I took EVDO on 17 July 2009. I paid 1000 for security and another 1150 for some unknown charges not known to BSNL staff and receipt did not mention any thing. It could be any thing from fisrt month charges and initial activation charges.

However,I received my first bill strangely to be deposited next day.

I went to Mahanagar Exchange to know the details as the bill was made @650+200 PM and 500 for activation charges. I was not aware of 650 PM charges as I was told only 550 PM and also I was told activation charges has already been taken.

So,I gave my bill to one of the person who is attached with AGM BSNL.

One fine morning my EVDO was not working and I lodged a complaint 944412 dt 14 Oct 2009. With lot of effort I came to know that my EVDO has been disabled for non payment. I requestd AGM to restore my EVDO which was done.

But strangely I found that without any information my user ID and password was changed to std+evdo number and wolla EVDO started working with I tried by hit and trial as per info gathered by me from one of the EVDO forum sites.

I tried bsnl/bsnl and cdma/cdma and then std without zero and my EVDO number.

This was done by me on the morning of Diwali day.

    Happy Diwali to EVDO users.

  42. I'm based in Mumbai where there is MTNL and no BSNL. I need EVDO mostly when I travel out of Mumbai. But just in case my wired broadband (MTNL Triband) fails me anytime can I use the BSNL EVDO anytime in Mumbai?

BTW, can I buy the BSNL EVDO in Mumbai? What about technical support in Mumbai?

  43. titu… the rate 2100 wht u have mentioned is offer rate and offer peroid is closed as on sept 2009.

Now the actual price is 3500 + 500 activation.

Last friday I have purchased the evdo from pondicherry and my use was in bangalore… and was able to use without any problem in roaming. it really good.
only prob is that we are not able to get the constant bandwidth.. its fluctating… other than this we can go ahead with bsnl evdo.
