Use EVDO in Linux for the best user experience.

Tux EVDOThe post title may sound bit weird, but it's pretty true. Using any internet connection in linux is a bliss. You will sure love the stabilty of network connection it offers and the speeds that you gain. There are few people who are using EVDO in windows and are facing many issues like frequent disconnections and low speeds. So using EVDO in linux is a great alternate solution for frustrated windows EVDO users.

If you are a kind of internet user who often use Internet just to check mails, read articles and do other online activities like watching youtube video, blogging or social networking, you will feel a great difference when you start using internet in linux. You won't miss most of the applications that you use in windows. Linux has got loads and loads of software packages available and all for free. Also you won't miss the windows, because you can install linux in another partition and have multi-boot with GRUB.

You may feel difficult to get started with using linux, but the massive online community is ready to solve all your problems and will help you to get started. If you are new to linux, I will recommend you to get started with Ubuntu Linux, which is free and very user-friendly. And also setting up EVDO in it takes no more than 10 minutes. Read this thread to know how to configure EVDO in Ubuntu linux and few others. I'm not forcing you to switch to linux, but just suggesting you to do it for the good reason. You will also have a proud feeling of using a free opensource and supporting the community.

EVDO outage in Bangalore!

Just like Electricity outage, Bangalore had to face EVDO outage for more than week and a half during the end of September and in the begining of October. Not all the Bangalore users faced this issue, but most people did. Which led users to connect only to CDMA 1x.

Most people, including me were frustrated with the outage. When I made contact with Customer Care officials, they said it's sorted out. But it wasn't for me. And it grew my impatience more and made me to contact once again. This time, they said the issues has been sorted out only in few areas and hung up!

After all this I created a thread in the forum seeking for replies from other Bangalore users and found that most people are facing the issue and few were not. So I thought to wait for few more days and planned to go to my exchange office and make a query.

But the issue was solved sooner and better. After this outage, I can see the increase in speed and stability. The reason for this outage is unknown. But I think there was either some maintenance work done all those days or some upgradation work.

Anyway, the EVDO is now up in Bangalore after a week and half outage. Happy Browsing!

Coimbatore to get 19 more EVDO Towers.

Good news for EVDO users and soon to become EVDO users in Coimbatore. BSNL is planning to install 19 more EVDO Towers (BTS) in Coimbatore city to increase it's coverage, which enables more new connections.

This increase in number of towers will also enable good roaming support within the city and gives out good signal strength. Yet the locations are unknown. Even we have no clue about when they start installing new towers.

We will try our best to update you people when they start installing EVDO towers and will also try to get EVDO coverage in Coimbatore.

All thanks goes to subash for buzzing us in this thread and to Coimbatore Live.

On-Rental or On-Purchase ?

As most of you know, there are two options to choose before you purchase the device. One is รข€On-Rentalรข€ and the another is รข€ล“On-Purchaseรข€. To know more about the price difference, see this page.

If you choose รข€ล“On-Rentalรข€, then you will pay little extra every month and if you opt to purchase the device at the beginning, i.e รข€ล“On-Purchaseรข€, then you will pay low bill every month.

So which plan is best for you? If you are big on pocket, you will go for รข€ล“On-Purchaseรข€, if not you will go for รข€ล“On-Rentalรข€. But there is something that you will have to keep in mind. On-Purchase will give you the limited warranty, but whereas On-Rental will give you unlimited warranty. So whatรข€™s the advantage?

Using BSNL EVDO in MAC

BSNL EVDO in MACFinally, now even MAC users can enjoy the wireless freedom of BSNL EVDO on their Macintosh Computers. Right from the beginning, we saw MAC users asking if they can use it on their MAC OS, but we unfortunately didn't knew the exact procedures to configure BSNL EVDO in it.

But now our forum member and moderator, veagles has found himself that BSNL EVDO can be configured and used in MAC OS without any glitch. He has written a tutorial in our forum on how to configure ZTE AC8700 BSNL EVDO in MAC and has shared with us. So all credit goes to him. Though the configuration is bit complicated, but he has explained each and every steps in detail, so you don't have to think much.

Click here to read the tutorial on how to configure and use BSNL EVDO in MAC. If you have any doubts and want any further assistance, you may register in our forum for free and reply to him in that thread. And also use the same thread to discuss anything related to the tutorial.

BSNL EVDO To Be Available in Chennai only in Outer Peripheral Areas

BSNL Chennai's website may claim that EVDO connections are available, but the reality is that they're offering connections only in outer peripheral areas. Sad as it may be but the news is true. I'd paid a visit to the Greames Road exchange in Chennai to apply for a EVDO connection. Initially I was thrilled to see the EVDO device infront of me, all my excitement died when I was informed that there's no CDMA tower in Triplicane, nor there is one in city. I was told that at the moment, BSNL is focussing on EVDO connections(in Chennai, atleast) only in areas where standard wired connectivity is not possible - areas like Perungudy, OMR, Velachery etc. On asking whether any CDMA towers will be setup anytime soon, I was met with blank faces. Have to say, this isn't the best of moves BSNL is making. There is immense response and demand to BSNL's EVDO service and BSNL isn't doing justice to their Chennai customers. As usual, We at BSNL EVDO Club will keep you guys updated with the latest information as and when it happens.

According to the official report, BSNL EVDO Coverage has been extended to whole of Bangalore. And the number of BSNL EVDO Towers in Bangalore is extended to 43 out of which 38 has been already established. And other remaining will be established in few weeks. We came to know that 1 tower requires almost a week or more to be completed. Technically, a tower is called as BTS or Base Transceiver Station. To know more about BTS, click here to read the wikipedia article. One BSNL EVDO BTS is capable of transmitting single over 5 - 8 kilometer in Radius. And meanwhile, few areas in Bangalore, where the Installation is still under progress may affect browsing speeds and connection stability for 1 - 2 Hours daily for a week.

And yet another good news is that the 4 Southern States, namely Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andra Pradesh and Kerala will be connected to much more efficient server which is located in Bangalore. There are hopes that this powerful server will break the bottle-neck and improve the data transfer speeds.

Coming back to BTS in Bangalore, we have also received the locations of BSNL EVDO Towers in Bangalore, which are already established (38 BTS). We will list down only the major areas, because as it is known that 1 BTS is able to transmit signal over 5 - 8 KM in radius:

BSNL EVDO Now Available In Chennai

It's a bit late, but nevertheless BSNL has finally rolled out their EVDO service in Chennai. While it is not clear as to if the service is CDMA-1X 2000 or EVDO(Bangalore had CDMA-1X 2000 service rolled out, only later did they start the EVDO service), based, still this should be good news for those people who have been waiting with baited breath for a whiff of fresh air in terms of wireless connectivity, that is the EVDO service. While this page mentions the availability and tariff(the same as other places), there is still lack of information about its availability, as Karthik mentions it in his tweet. Good news is that another user, Nagarajan has posted that he has obtained a connection this comment. I shall keep you guys informed regarding the status.

BSNL EVDO Review from Coimbatore (CDMA EV-DO)

By: Subash

This review is of BSNL's CDMA EV-DO (2.4 Mbps) from Coimbatore!

On 30th January 2008 - I have got the EVDO connection, Initially I was in trouble to connect to the drivers on my Vista OS, with the help of BSNL officials at Saibabacolony exchange(COimbatore) I was able to solve the problems. At that time I exchanged my views of BSNL and they mentioned some of the future plans of BSNL.

Key Points

- Till date they have given 150 connections at Coimbatore within a month. So people are ready to experiment the new concepts in telecommunication. They said the response is good.

- BSNL engineers said they are not sure about the capacity of each tower(ie- simultaneous connection from the tower). So if they get complaints they will stop giving the new connection.

- Coimbatore BSNL gets the internet bandwidth from Madurai BSNL.

- Some EVDO people asking the official about why they are not getting connection even they are far from tower (7-8 kms) so the people are not aware of the coverage area

- All the Vista OS people having the driver problem and BSNL officials are solving it by asking the people to come to the Exchange with the laptop. So if anybody has Desktop with Vista - they will be in trouble.

- The main point is:
They are going to install EVDO facility to another 15 towers within 4-5 months.(Now only 2 towers are having this facility). So we will get the EVDO all over India soon.

Coverage

- When I connect the net through EVDO at first time, I was able to get the yellow signal only (ie - CDMA coverage) then within 20 minutes I was able to get the EVDO coverage.

- On 30th January evening at around 9PM I was able to get a high speed around 1 Mbps. Normally I am able to get around 300 to 800 kbps speed.

- I was able to talk with one of my cousin who is in US through Skype along with good quality of video.

BSNL EVDO started at Coimbatore.

Submitted by: Subash

I visited to one of the local exchange at Saravanampatti, Coimbatore to enquire about the EV-DO. At that time BSNL officials testing the EV-DO coverage. Actually in Coimbatore - they have installed EV-DO in 2 towers(Race course and Ganapathy). And it started function from yesterday (16-Jan-2008)

My place is near to Ganapathy (6-7 kms by road)- so they had checking the signals . In saravanmpatty they are not able to get the EV-DO signal, but they are able to receive the 144 kbps. So they plan to increase the height of the instrument at the tower.

They suggest me to wait for another week - so that they can check the signal strengths fully.

From their view- they are able to get the signal from 800-900 kbps on EV-DO on different areas within the coverage.

Also the cost for the connection is Rs 550 per month and the device rent is 200. So it comes 750 rs per month + tax.

They are treating me well :)
